Province:
North East Basins of India, Bangladesh SE

Type Locality and Naming

FR Mallet used the name Tipam Series after the Tipam Hills (27°16'N; 95°30'E) of Assam in India. Its synonym is Tipam Group. Its type area is the Dihing river of Assam (27°15'N; 95°25'E).

Lithology and Thickness

Clayey sandstone. The group is subdivided into two formations: the Tipam Sandstone Formation (renamed as Jaipur Fm) and the Girujan Clay Fm. See those units for details.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformable contact of the Jaipur Fm (Tipam Sandstone Formation) coarse-grained sandstone sequence overlying the Bokabil Fm in the marginal portions of the basin as well as in the shelf areas in the west. In the deeper sections of the basin the contact is conformable.

Upper contact

The sandy deposits of the Dupitila Fm unconformably overlie its upper Girujan Fm Clay.

Regional extent

Khasi & Jaintia Hills, Mikir Hills, Dhansiri Valley, Naga Schuppen Belt, SE Bangladesh: It is exposed in Upper Assam and the Surma valley and extends to the Arakan coast. However, the Tipam Group of the Bengal Basin is not related in any way to the Tipam Group proper of the Dihing Basin (according to Banglapidia entry)
